With this film, John Carpenter went from commercially successful critical darling to cautionary tale, but it has stood the test of time to become one of his best efforts.
Thank you! As I mentioned in my article, I wasn’t a big fan of THE FOG when I first saw it but then years later I revisited it and enjoyed it a lot more. Whatever it was that I didn’t like about it was gone and replaced by an appreciation of what Carpenter and co. did.
I used to think that but upon subsequent viewings I find THE FOG to be very cinematic. Those shots of the fog rolling into the town or the attack on the boat. Those don’t look or feel like a made-for-T.V. movie at all.
I love the slow burn build up and the ominous feeling of dread that permeates the film.
This is my favourite horror film of all time. Sometimes you don't need gore and possessed children in order for something to be scary.
Nice writeup on a very underrated movie.
Thank you! It is definitely a film that deserves more love.
Really enjoyed this, J.D.
I would say The Fog is 4th in my Carpenter ranking behind Escape from New York, Assault on Precinct 13 and, of course, The Thing
I think it’s often forgotten when people look at his filmography but it’s a good wee chiller
Got my article on The Thing coming on Monday and it’s good see Carpenter getting discussed again as we come into spooky season 👍🏼

Always thought that the reason this movie didn’t work was because it was like watching a “ made for TV” movie.
I’ve just watched Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Driller Killer, Alien, Dawn of the Dead etc and then I get this?
The advertising to the public didn’t help as it relied heavily on Halloween, as if there was a connection, especially with Jaime Lee Curtis in it.
Movie was a major disappointment.
